BESIX Infra testing sustainable solutions on the Hamme construction site

At BESIX Infra, we are working towards a future in which infrastructure works produce no greenhouse gas emissions. We are putting this ambition into practice on the site in Strijderslaan in Hamme, a project commissioned by Aquafin and the Local Authority of Hamme, where we focus on innovative and environmentally friendly solutions.

Emission-free technology on site

In addition to our electric roller, we’ve been using small battery-powered hand tools for some time now, such as a small grinder and rotary hammers. Recently, we expanded this range with three new electric machines: two rammers, a core drill, and a concrete saw. Before our workers started using them, they received extensive training on the correct and safe use of these tools. Afterwards, they eagerly put them to the test in practice. In this way, we continue to expand our range of electric site equipment and work toward a more sustainable approach.

To maximize the use of green energy on site, we are also testing solar panels in combination with a battery on the site trailer. In addition, we will soon switch to using HVO diesel, a more sustainable alternative to traditional diesel.

These actions are part of a broader test phase in which we extensively trial new technologies with a lower environmental impact. If the evaluation is positive, we aim to scale these solutions more widely within our company.

Circular and environmentally conscious construction

We are also taking important steps in materials use and water management. We work as much as possible with cement-free foundations and ensure that demolition materials are 100% recycled into new foundations and pavements. Groundwater on site is sampled and tested for potential contamination. If necessary, we purify it on-site using a mobile water treatment installation before discharging it into surface water.

Knowledge through measurement

On this site, we collect all available data and measurements to accurately map energy consumption, emissions, and potential savings. These insights form the basis for further optimizations and sustainable choices—on this site and for future projects.

Working together for a more sustainable sector

We can’t make infrastructure more sustainable on our own. This site in Hamme also serves as a platform for dialogue and cooperation. We actively share the knowledge and insights we gain here with our partners and client Aquafin. Together, we explore how to fully harness the potential of sustainability. This collaboration reinforces our shared ambition to make the construction sector greener and more future-proof. Step by step, we are moving towards a more sustainable way of working.
