Nordhavn Tunnel welcomes visitors below Copenhagen harbour

Visitors to Copenhagen’s Nordhavn district had a rare opportunity to step behind the construction fencing on Sunday 27 September.

The Danish Road Directorate and the BESIX-MT Højgaard joint venture opened the Nordhavn Tunnel site to the public for a closer look at the work taking place beneath the city and a bustling harbour.

A closer look below ground

The visit took guests down into the excavation pit on the Østerbro side, reaching depths of up to 18 metres. From there, they could see how the 1.4-kilometre tunnel has been cast section by section beneath Svanemølle harbour and Kalkbrænderiløbet. The tunnel is being built using the cut-and-cover method: a trench is excavated, the concrete tunnel structure is constructed inside it, and the area above is then gradually restored. Project teams were on hand to explain the construction process and answer questions.

Street art above ground

There was plenty to see above ground too. In the days before the event, 12 Danish street art artists transformed the site fencing into a large outdoor gallery. Each artist worked on a 20-metre section, bringing a different style and story to the perimeter of the construction site.

During the unveiling, visitors met the artists, heard more about their work and watched the final details take shape. Those keen to get involved could also try street art themselves, with guidance from professional artists.

The open day gave local residents and curious visitors a direct view of a major infrastructure project that is usually hidden behind hoardings. It was also a chance to meet the people delivering it and to bring some colour to the site while the work continues.
