Aesthetics and pragmatics go hand in hand for Coca Cola in Wilrijk

BESIX Infra is ensuring that the Terbekenhofdreef, at the production and distribution site of Coca-Cola European Partners in Wilrijk, will never be flooded again. Rainwater is buffered from the company premises and discharged at a small rate to the public sewer system. The buffer basin itself is constructed as an open pond, which becomes publicly accessible, with 2 fountains and a retaining wall.

Directional drilling

A cast iron pipe 600 mm in diameter was inserted underneath the site to pump the water from the company site to the basin. This feat over a distance of more than 200 m was carried out by Van den Berg. The project is an example of how complex works can be successfully completed through an integrated approach between various BESIX Infra entities.

Pragmatics and aesthetics in one

In addition, Coca-Cola European Partners wants to mix business with pleasure by providing enough lunch benches, stepping stones and trees to make the buffer basin a place to relax peacefully. With this project, Coca-Cola European Partners has shown that it is possible to combine pragmatics and aesthetics in one project.

Excess water drained away

The water, which enters at a rate of over 180 litres per second, is diverted to a buffer basin. Once it arrives there, it comes to a standstill and can gradually be drained. This is a solution to a problem which the entire industrial estate had suffered for years, and in which Coca-Cola European Partners, as one of the companies in the industrial estate, wanted to play a pioneering role.
