
On 7 August, the Flemish Roads and Traffic Agency (Agentschap Wegen en Verkeer), De Vlaamse Waterweg, the municipality of Waasmunster and contractors BESIX, BESIX Infra and TMI officially launched the Durme Bridge renewal project. The works form an important part of the redevelopment of the N446 between Waasmunster, Hamme and Dendermonde. The project extends far beyond the construction of a new bridge. It also includes upgrades to the adjoining regional road, the complete reconstruction of the approach ramps, and the creation of new connections to the towpaths along the Durme. Construction will begin in August 2026 and is scheduled for completion by the end of 2027.

BESIX is leading the consortium responsible for delivering the project. Together with BESIX Infra and TMI, the team combines expertise in bridge construction, road infrastructure and steel structures. The contract includes the demolition of the existing Durme Bridge and the construction of a new steel truss bridge downstream from the current structure. As the new bridge will be built at a different location, the road infrastructure on both sides of the Durme will need to be reconnected to the existing regional road. This combination of bridge construction, roadworks and landscape integration makes the project technically complex and highly versatile.

For BESIX Infra, the N446 is familiar territory. The company has previously contributed to the redevelopment of sections of this important regional road. The new Durme Bridge represents a missing link within that corridor and will connect to the sections of road that have already been upgraded on either side of the river. Drawing on its knowledge of the area and the existing infrastructure, the consortium can build on earlier achievements along the N446. Once completed, the new bridge will not only improve road safety but also provide better connections for cyclists, motorists and users of the riverside towpaths.

In addition to the infrastructure works, the project pays close attention to its surrounding environment. The new bridge will feature a longer span, improving water flow and helping to reduce the risk of flooding. An ecological crossing will also be created, allowing wildlife to move safely along the river corridor. The project furthermore includes the development of a compensatory woodland area. By combining mobility improvements, water management and nature development within a single scheme, the project takes an integrated approach to sustainable infrastructure. By the end of 2027, the new bridge is expected to be fully operational, providing the region with a future-ready crossing over the Durme.
