Lower CO₂ emissions thanks to transport via the canal

BESIX Infra is carrying out road and sewerage works in Grimbergen on behalf of Aquafin and the municipality of Grimbergen. The site is located close to the Brussels–Scheldt Sea Canal, and that proximity offers a clear opportunity: instead of sending hundreds of trucks onto the road, we jointly opted to transport excavated soil by ship.

On Friday 30 January, a vessel departed with 3,250 tonnes of soil, the equivalent of roughly 120 truckloads that are not travelling through the surrounding area. For this shipment, CO₂ emissions are approximately 65% lower compared to moving the same volume by road.

By removing soil by ship, we immediately take a significant amount of heavy traffic out of the vicinity of the construction site. The impact is felt in the streets around Grimbergen: less congestion, reduced noise and dust, and safer routes for residents and schoolchildren. With this shared decision by BESIX Infra and the project owners, we limit inconvenience for neighbours, enhance road safety, and shrink our environmental footprint. Benefits that are noticeable today and tomorrow.

Wherever possible, we choose smart, sustainable logistics that respect the community and benefit the climate.
