Working in the very heart of Antwerp presented a wide range of challenges. Narrow streets, sensitive historic buildings and a dense underground network of cables and utilities required the highest level of precision. At the same time, the area remained in constant use by residents, shopkeepers, schools and emergency services.
Thanks to a carefully phased approach and continuous coordination with all stakeholders, daily city life was able to continue as smoothly as possible. Accessibility and safety remained key priorities throughout even the most disruptive phases of the works.
The works extended well beyond the visible redevelopment of the public space. In most streets, the sewer system was completely replaced, while in the Sint-Katelijnevest the historic canals (ruien) were preserved and reinforced with a new watertight inner lining.
Above ground, BESIX Infra opted for durable materials and a layout designed to withstand intensive urban use. In several streets, prefabricated tram tracks and panels were installed, an innovative technique new to Antwerp. This approach reduced construction time and disruption, while requiring meticulous preparation and execution.
To minimise vibrations and avoid damage to historic buildings, the team worked with compact and lightweight machinery, fully adapted to the limited space of the inner city.

The successful delivery of the Stadslus was the result of close collaboration between BESIX Infra, the City of Antwerp, De Lijn, utility companies and other partners. Short communication lines allowed the team to respond quickly to unforeseen situations. Residents and shopkeepers were also kept closely informed through targeted communication.
With the completion of the Stadslus, BESIX Infra leaves behind a renewed part of the city and a strong reference within its expertise in urban infrastructure.
