The sewer and water works include the construction of a separate sewer system in the Uitbreidingsstraat, where waste and rainwater are discharged separately. This relieves the burden on the sewer system and improves water purification. Rainwater is discharged to the Wolvenberg nature park for natural purification. This sustainable approach reduces water nuisance, protects the environment, and enhances the ecological value of the park.
The renewal of the tram infrastructure is an essential part of the project and is carried out in close cooperation with De Lijn. The tram bed, platforms, and overhead lines are completely modernized to meet today's requirements for comfort, safety, and sustainability. To minimize the impact on tram service, one tram track remains operational throughout the duration of the works. This approach ensures continuous tram traffic while the works represent an important step in improving the public transport network in Antwerp.
The reconstruction of the Grotesteenweg (N1) and the renovation of the Mechelsebrug were carefully phased to minimize inconvenience. In the summer of 2023, the east side of the bridge was tackled, followed by the west side in the summer of 2024. During these renovations, including joint and concrete repairs, the traffic axes remained partially operational via temporary detours. At the same time, new bike paths, sidewalks, and traffic signage were installed. One tram track remained permanently in use during the renewal of the tram infrastructure. Night and weekend work and clear signage ensured minimal impact on traffic and the environment.
