Redesign of Jozef Vervaenestaat in Ghent

The redesign of Jozef Vervaenestraat and adjacent roads in Ghent is a significant infrastructure project aimed at improving mobility, livability, and sustainability in this urban area. The project includes the installation of modern sewer systems, the construction of new tram tracks, and the redesign of roads, bike paths, and sidewalks. This large-scale project plays a key role in strengthening the infrastructure and enhancing the urban living environment in Ghent.

Sewer Works

The sewer works include extensive installation and modification of both DWA and RWA sewers. DWA pipes use stoneware pipes with diameters of 250 and 300 mm, while RWA pipes are made of reinforced concrete with diameters ranging from 600 to 1200 mm. A significant part of the work is a 1000 mm diameter underpass under the E17 on- and off-ramps, including the construction of press and reception pits made from secant panels. Additionally, a pumping station is being built, along with associated overflow structures and an HDPE pressure pipe with a diameter of 125 mm. The project also includes the installation of house and street gully connections and the re-profiling of existing drainage ditches to ensure better drainage.

Rail Construction

The rail construction is crucial to the project and includes the installation of new tram tracks. This is accompanied by the construction of associated infrastructure, such as platforms and shelters, designed to meet the requirements of efficient and comfortable tram operation. Modern tram and bus signaling is also being installed, including vertical and horizontal markings, to ensure safe traffic flow.

Paving Works

The paving works provide a solid and durable finish for the roads and other surfaces. The roads are made of continuously reinforced concrete, known for its robustness and long lifespan. Asphalt pavements are also being laid, with a special application of colored asphalt for bike paths. The sidewalks are paved with concrete pavers, while the parking strips are finished with natural stone cobblestones. Linear elements, such as curbs and water channels, are also being installed, complete with the necessary foundations to ensure their stability.

Adjustments under the E17

The adjustments under the E17 are crucial for strengthening and optimizing the infrastructure. Slopes are adjusted with Berlin walls, which provide stability to the bridge structure and surrounding ground. Exposed concrete is used for a durable and aesthetic finish, resistant to wear. These interventions ensure stability, safety, and sufficient space for new tram tracks, sidewalks, and roads. The area is made both functional and visually attractive, with attention to modern urban traffic and long-term sustainability.

Phasing

The phasing of the works begins with preparatory activities such as making the construction site bomb-free and setting up temporary traffic measures. This is followed by sewer works, including trench stabilization, pipe installation, and the construction of a pumping station. Next is the rail construction with new tram tracks and associated infrastructure, followed by the installation of pavements and slope adjustments under the E17. The final phase includes finishing, signage, and delivery, with a focus on minimal disruption and safe execution.
